Women's Role in the Regiment
Women's role with the Illinois Regiment
Here are some interesting notes from John Dodge's Quartermaster's Book
At
Fort Jefferson (Illin's Regim't)
Account of House Expenses:
Paid a woman for sundry kitchen services, six yards camlet out of
the house
expense account.
State of Virginia to Store:
June 15th, 1780. Paid Nancy Hunter per receipt for making six ruffled shirts,
one silk and one India handkerchief.
June 20th, 1780. Issued to Mary Smith per order Capt'n George and receipt
for
making one suit of soldiers clothes, four yards flannel.
July 15th, 1780. Issued per order of Col. Montgomery for Anne Elms,
nurse in the
hospital per her receipt, seven yards of calico.
Soooo, we know the ladies were assisting the Regiment by cooking,
nursing, and sewing for us.
Just another couple of excuses for us to keep the
pretty girls around us guys!
I also find it interesting that the Quartermaster was trading them fabric
for there services,
as camlet, flannel, and calico are all fabrics.
